Women of Softcom

Chika Okoro

How would you describe your work at Softcom? And what are you most proud of?

I would describe my work at Softcom today as the “match-maker”. I say today because there are unlimited growth opportunities at Softcom. I primarily work with leaders across teams to find the right talent they need to support their efforts in building and putting our products out in the market.

Proud and memorable moments at work is when the talents that walked with me through the recruitment process go on to do great things within their teams. During such times, I feel like I am changing the world in my own way because I facilitated access and inclusion through my contributions within the business. It’s truly an amazing feeling.

What does choosing to challenge mean personally for you?

Choosing to challenge means choosing to change the narrative about what the female gender represents. She is capable, she is gifted, and she can pursue her dreams. She shouldn’t be stereotyped into a description that wasn’t given to her by the Creator.

I personally “choose to challenge” by going after my God-given passions, being unapologetic about my growth journey, achieving my full potential through education and mentorship, as well as sharing my journey with other women around me so that they know nothing is impossible for them.

What would access and inclusion look like for you in the Africa Softcom is trying to build?
Access and inclusion in Africa to me means equitable distribution of opportunities. Although Africa has long been tagged as a disadvantaged continent, through technology and the work Softcom is doing, we can change the narrative by making basic things like Education accessible to every child regardless of their location, privilege, or gender.
How did you get into the tech environment?

My interest in tech got stirred up at my last job where I consulted with a leading financial institution to fill some of their developer roles. I always interacted with mobile and web applications but never really dug deep into how they were built until the brief came to my table.

Although most of it was somewhat abstract, my interest in trying out new things spurred me into doing the research and I didn’t hesitate to jump at the chance to join Softcom as a Tech Recruiter when the opportunity came knocking. It has been exciting to learn about how the different teams work together to build products that are changing the narrative of how we pay, learn, identify people and collect data.

What do you do for fun?
I like to hang out with friends and loved ones, see movies, and sleep 🙂
