Women of Softcom

Ugomma Ukegbu

How would you describe the work you do at Softcom? And what are you most proud of?

I work in the Operations department at Softcom – one of the most important departments in any organisation, yet very underrated. A business that fails to manage its operations fails to function in an effective and efficient manner.

Proud moments at work happens when I’m providing support for the different teams to enable them deliver on their set goals and realizing the impact of my efforts

What does choosing to challenge mean personally for you?

We’re all accustomed to certain norms and general practices. Choosing to challenge starts with a curiosity that questions those norms. I’m a very curious person. I like to know the why’s and the how’s of a thing, and also how it affects people.

Choosing to challenge requires an open-mindedness to look beyond and look for better. To challenge, you need to be able to recognise and accept when there is dissatisfaction and explore ways that will lead to satisfaction.

Choosing to challenge means being brave enough to have the difficult conversations that most people would shy away from. In society, women are expected to be a certain way, with archaic gender roles and redundant cultural norms. I choose to challenge by staying curious, open-minded, restless and brave in the face of challenges.

What would access and inclusion look like for you in the Africa Softcom is trying to build?
Access and inclusion in Africa will be equal access to places and services for both male and female.
How did you get into the tech environment?

It started with the realisation that the future is digital and technology is the means by which we’re going to arrive at that future. The desire to be a part of the individuals that shape that future is what drove me to get into the tech environment.

What do you do for fun?

Netflix & Chill. Coming up with awesome recipes and trying them out. Having insightful conversions on social media and in person.
